What began in 2008 as taking posed portraits of the characters on Hollywood Boulevard, has turned into a character study of Melissa–a.k.a. “Marilyn,” “Black Swan,” and many others. I love taking photos of her. Even if I wasn’t a photographer, I would follow her, just to hear her stories. What attracts me is her unrivaled enthusiasm for her performance. She is always “on,” even when she is not on the Boulevard.

I showed these photos last weekend at the En Masse/MOPLA gallery show. It was tons of fun and great to see the photos so large!

Please click here, or the photo below, to check out the work I showed at the exhibit last weekend. It was so difficult for me to edit this project!

This is just a fraction of the thousands of photos I’ve taken of Melissa over the past three years, and I look forward to take many more to come.

I have started a project on IndiGogo.

A few years ago, my grandmother, Dorothea Austin Banner, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. She is my last living grandparent, and a Holocaust survivor. I didn’t think at the time what this would mean to my family, our history, and our future. Last year I visited her in NY. I had my camera and took some snapshots of the house, not really thinking about an outcome. Looking at these photos a year later has made me realize I will very much regret it if I don’t go back to New York and take some photos of her, and document as much of her and her home as I can.

The money I raise on indigogo.com will be used for my plane tickets to New York, for equipment rental once I get there, food and lodging while I am in New York, marketing costs, and printing and framing costs as I hope to show these in a gallery once I am finished with the series. If I don’t reach my entire goal, I can at least get to New York and take some photos!
I hope to include some great perks to make it worth your while and your money! I understand if you do not or cannot help monetarily, and I would be thrilled if you could just share this project with others.

Please click the photo link above to check out more details about the project. Thanks!

I am so excited to be participating in two shows in April as a part of MOPLA (the Month of Photography in LA).

The first show will be April 21st. It is a group show for the photo collective I founded, This is a photo blog. You can check out the Facebook event page by clicking here, and the press release with more info by clicking here!

The second show I will have work in is a group show from another collective I am a member of, called En Masse. Each member selected a different area of Los Angeles to photograph (mine is Hollywood). Each set of photos will be projected and displayed, along with a specially curated musical selection by a KCRW DJ. It should be awesome! This show will be the closing night event of MOPLA, on April 30th.

Please see flyers below for more info on each show. I hope to see you there!

I am so happy to be included in “Life Support Japan”, a gallery show supporting the relief effort in Japan.

Please help support relief efforts in Japan by purchasing a limited edition print of mine, or one of the other photographers included in the show. Each print is only $50.00 in a very limited edition of only 10 prints. You will receive an 8×10 color print. ALL proceeds go to the 2 organizations listed below.

For more details please read statement below from gallery owner Crista Dix, and click here to visit the Wall Space Gallery website. You will find my photo in the “Life Support Japan 4″ gallery. Thank you!

“Natural disasters happen all the time, like landslides, floods, earthquakes. We live on a planet that isn’t static. Friday, March 11th, we witnessed a natural disaster with a very human toll. The earthquake in Japan was of such magnitude that even the most prepared nation in the world to handle a disaster of this type was overwhelmed. It wasn’t the earthquake alone, which was devastating enough but watching a 30 foot high wall of mud and debris wipe entire communities away was beyond any ability I personally had to comprehend.

I had to do something. Aline Smithson, one of our gallery artists wanted to do something too. Ryan Nabulsi and Jennifer Schwartz joined the effort. Soon I was hearing from every part of our creative community that we wanted to reach out to help the people of Japan. Life Support Japan was created to bring assistance to those in Japan who need it.

We have selected two charities to benefit from the sales of these limited edition prints.

Direct Relief International, http://www.directrelief.org/ for help with medical supplies.
Direct Relief works closely with the United Nations (U.N.) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA), which has activated to assemble the international response. Direct Relief has mobilized and staged materials at our headquarters, which are standing by ready for airlift to Japan.

Habitat for Humanity Japan, http://www.habitat.orgto/ help in the rebuilding of communities in and around Sendai and northern Japan.

Artists from around the globe have donated limited editions, over 200 to date, and we will be consistently updating the images available.

Thank you for your support and for being part of a global community.
